A mythological fire-breathing creature with a giant
serpent’s body and the claws of a lion.
There is much discussion concerning the actual existence of these
creatures during medieval times. As
depicted, and we have little argument, they are basically the same in all parts
of the world. A European dragon is
easily recognized as an Asian dragon or an African dragon. One may question their existence because there
are problems. The dragon is supposed to fly. The normal depiction of a dragon
is definitely an organism with minimal aerodynamics. How could this creature actually breathe
fire? Why are there no fossil records?
If they lived at one time, why are there none today? These are problems, but I do not consider
them to be insurmountable.
Let us address the aerodynamics problem first. Birds, bats, and some insects have the
ability to fly. This is accomplished
through very light body design and extremely powerful muscles. Man created machines that have the ability to
fly. In the case of the airplane, it
takes advantage of the air pressure created by an airfoil wing. The
airfoil creates a low-pressure area on top of the wing, requiring the airplane
to travel at a relative high rate of speed.
There is one other group of
flying machines developed by man: blimps and the dirigibles, which maintain
flight by being lighter than the surrounding air. They are basically big
containers of a gas that is lighter than air.
One might notice that the size of the wings of a dragon are depicted to
be rather small relative to their size. This
fact alone rules out the airfoil design.
My hypothesis is that they were basically blimps. Their large bodies were sponges filled with a
light gas. The question then is what gas
could possibly be produced in a creature of the nature of a dragon. The normal
process of digestion produces gases. In
some animals the most abundant gas is methane.
Methane is chemically composed of a carbon atom bonded to four hydrogen
atoms. Under the right conditions, the
molecule of methane can be broken down to its atomic components. Hydrogen
is the lightest element; therefore, the perfect gas to fill the spongy tissues
of the dragon’s body. The hydrogen
would permeate through the digestive system into the surrounding tissues making
the dragon’s body lighter than the surrounding air. To move and maneuver the dragon uses its
short wings and its tail. To adjust
height and rate of climb, hydrogen would be expelled through the anus. The dragon could make quick maneuvers by
expelling strong jets of hydrogen through its anus. The
dragon would have a multiple stomach arrangement, the first stomach digest the
food to its basic molecular structure and molecules needed for growth, energy
and repairs are directed through a gut.
The second stomach stores Methane from the digestive process, and the
third stomach converts the methane to hydrogen and carbon. The hydrogen is permeated through the wall of
the stomach into the sponge like gas bags.
The carbon is used to form the scales protecting the dragon.
Now that we have the dragon off the ground, let me determine
logically how the dragon could possibly breathe fire. Basically we have all the components necessary
for a flame thrower. Remember the
methane in the second stomach? When
threatened, the dragon had the ability to belch out quantities of the methane
gas. The problem is how the dragon can
ignite the gas? This can be explained,
once again by looking at most duplication of the dragon. The dragon appears to have sharp interlocking
teeth. Instead of being covered with
calcium fluoride, the upper teeth are covered with silicon dioxide, and the
lower teeth are covered with iron dioxide.
When the teeth are snapped together they create a spark that will ignite
the methane. The flames are actually
shot out the nostrils. A highly
effective flame thrower. The force
behind the flame is created by the rather large lungs. Creating a flying fire breathing organism is
quite possible.
The fossil record of other eradicated organisms is due to other
minerals replacing their bones. The skeletal structure of the dragon must out
of necessity be composed of rather light weight material. The structure is formed from beryllium carbonate
instead of calcium carbonate. Beryllium
is lighter than calcium but has the same chemical properties. Beryllium, however is more unstable then
calcium. As soon as the organism dies,
the beryllium carbonate starts reacting with water in the environment and
breaks down. The beryllium bones are
very lightweight, but very unstable unless the beryllium is constantly
replaced. The places where dragons once
existed are areas containing modern Beryllium deposits. Another practical reason that there is no
record is the usefulness of the dragon’s parts.
When a dragon was killed or died of natural causes, the carcass would be a gold mine of useful
parts. Scales would be used for building
materials, which in archeological digs may not be recognized as being of animal
origin. Remember the necessary
requirement that all the materials be lightweight; these things would tend to
break down rather rapidly. The human
body with its heavy bones will break down in a couple of hundred years unless
protected in some manner. Since there
has been no confirmed sights of dragons since the 14th century, it is very unlikely there would be anything
left. Granted there are fossil bones of
animals that died millions of years ago, but these bones were calcium and stable
enough to be replaced by even more stable mineral.
Dragons were large and perceived to be dangerous
animals. These are the animals that are
destined to become exterminated by humans.
Manhood has for centuries been determined by the size of animal that a
man killed. Dragons were the perfect
targets. The dragon is a special
case. Dragon have a special ability the
makes them the target for extermination.
The dragon has the ability to determine if a woman is a virgin. At one time this information was very
important. Medical science as far back
as the 13th century had method of shrouding the fact that a bride to
be was a virgin when such was not true.
Many a rich merchant or royal person would pay handsomely to ensure that
their bride to be was truly a virgin. The dragon’s downfall was that dragons, like
old ladies who collect Franklin mint stuff, collected virgins. At any dragon’s lair, a young ambitious
knight could find a virgin that could be traded for a fabulous ransom. The challenge
for the knight was to kill the dragon and carry off the virgin, or
virgins. Of course, this was not
easy. Dragons are well equipped to ward
off most trying to cash in on the dragon’s stash of virgins. One good blow of ignited methane gas could
discourage or turn the tables on the would be assassin. Many did try and many did die. Of course, occasionally a brave knight with
enough encouragement could overcome the dragon’s defenses. Once you have the virgin in hand, the knight
put the virgin on the auction block.
There were many members of royalty that could pay handsomely. At that
time there were some entrepreneurs that could offer, in some cases, even
more. These business men were in the
business of selling medications of various types. By far the most profitable was sexual
stimulates to sell to old rich men so they could service their expensive trophy
virgins. The strongest of such drugs
was refined from the horn of unicorns.
The problems with obtaining unicorns was, it simply was impossible to
catch a unicorn. Like all wonderful
things in this world, the unicorn had one weakness: A unicorn trusted virgins,
and they knew if a woman was a virgin or not.
They could not be tricked. The
hunter would tie the virgin to a tree stump.
While she was weeping a unicorn would come up to her and lie its head in
her lap. At this moment the hunter would
throw a net over the unicorns and quickly hack off its head. At the going price for unicorn horn, a person
could get extremely wealthy. Unicorn
horn was more valuable than gold. In fact,
weight for weight it was the most
valuable material that has ever been traded on the open market.
The whole story boils down to this. In order to maintain a four hour erection, the world has been deprived of both dragons
and unicorns. Thank goodness we live in
a more enlightened world now. How could
we destroy God’s creation for a simple roll in the bed with a virgin?
